How is the MEA, which is an employees’ association different from a union? Do they negotiate with the City for raises, better working conditions and health benefits?
We are different because the Taylor Law precludes collective bargaining by a union for managers and confidential employees. MEA is the only recognized employee organization for managers and confidential employees. MEA advocates on behalf of all managers and confidential employees for salaries, benefits, working conditions, etc.

Once I have submitted my application for membership, how long does it take for it to be approved and how will dues be deducted?
The processing time varies from agency to agency. You will see the MGT EMPE ASSN deduction on your pay stub (pension stub or statement for retirees) when the dues are being collected.

MEA is open to all managers and Original Jurisdiction employees who are members of the Management Benefits Fund and to confidential employees.

Why should I join the MEA when I'll get exactly the same wages and benefits without joining?
Right, you get all that the rest of us get. But we could get so much more if we didn't have nonmembers. Aren't you interested in further gains? Well, these can be won only if enough of us want them and are willing to work to get them. If every manager felt as you do, there would be no MEA to advocate for us or to represent us in grievances. The longer you remain a nonmember, the more difficult it is for the MEA to improve your wages and working conditions. If everyone belonged, the benefits would be greater and the cost would be spread among more people. MEA needs you. Your involvement and participation will make us more powerful and effective. By not being a member, you miss the sense of belonging, the friendship, the feeling of being fully accepted by your fellow workers. Each person has an obligation to share equally the cost of supporting the organization that wins the benefits. It is not fair for a person to realize all the benefits of MEA’s activism and not pay a fair share of the cost of gaining these benefits.
