Creating Your Own Links

Creating Your Own Links

The NYC Managerial Employees Association (MEA) is now on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with over 100 million members and growing rapidly. With LinkedIn you exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities with a broader network of professionals, colleagues and other New York City Managers. LinkedIn is sort of the professional person's answer to "Six Degrees of Separation".
Learning how to use LinkedIn is no more difficult than learning how to use any other social networking site - with a few caveats. Since LinkedIn is designed for professionals, a professional mindset is recommended for developing profiles and introductions to new contacts.
Signing up for and using LinkedIn is completely free to users. The site does have some advertising, but it's not as invasive as other networking sites. To get started, you must log in to establish a free account. You can also upgrade to a paid LinkedIn membership. Most people are happy with the standard free account.
Once you sign up for a LinkedIn account, either free or paid, you can create your own professional profile. Remember, since this is a more serious-minded website, it's important that information in your profile represents your professional characteristics. LinkedIn is not the place to share indiscreet personal information or embarrassing photos.
Some of the things you can add to a profile include the basics of your resume, a summary about yourself, your contact information, links to the MEA website and/or blog, Twitter account, etc.
Once your profile is tweaked and ready for viewing, you can publish it and start looking for "connections". A connection is a person whom you know or would like to know more about on LinkedIn. Essentially, the idea is to create as many direct connections as you can by adding people within your own professional circle and branching out to include their connections.
MEA has set up a group in the Groups section of LinkedIn. To join our MEA LinkedIn group, go to the Groups section and search for "NYC Managerial Employees Association (MEA)". Once MEA comes up, click on the join group button and your request to join our MEA LinkedIn group will be sent to a moderator who will establish your MEA status.
