Earth Day

Earth Day is observed on April 22 and this year marks the 55th anniversary of this global environmental movement. The theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” focuses on renewable energy as a solution to climate challenges and calls for tripling renewable energy generation globally by 2030. 


The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will host Car-Free Earth Day on Saturday, April 26, transforming streets in the city into vibrant public spaces from 10am to 4pm. This annual event marks the official start to NYC’s Open Streets season and promotes sustainable transportation alternatives. New York City Department of Parks & Recreation connects New Yorkers with nature through Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations throughout April and May. New York City Department of Sanitation plays a crucial role in environmental protection through proper waste management. All NYC residents are required to recycle, and the department provides free curbside collection services.   • Set out metal, glass, plastic, cartons, mixed paper, and cardboard for recycling
  • Use labeled bins (55 gallons or less) with secure lids or clear plastic bags
  • Place recycling at the curb after 6:00 PM (bins) or 8:00 PM (bags)
  • Flatten and bundle cardboard for easier collection
