In partnership with the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) and the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the city has announced a new initiative to help city employees manage and potentially eliminate their student loan debt. This program will provide free access to student loan experts and online tools through a partnership with Summer, a certified B Corporation specializing in student loan assistance.
The initiative aims to help more than 100,000 city employees enroll in the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program and Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans, potentially eliminating an estimated $360 million in student loan debt. City employees will receive expert guidance in verifying their eligibility for PSLF, managing paperwork for enrollment, and staying on track for loan forgiveness.
- A pilot phase of the program has launched with employees from the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the Department of Social Services (DSS), and the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA).
- The full service will begin a phased rollout for all city employees starting in September 2025.
- Family members of public servants who independently qualify for PSLF — either by working for another branch of government or for a qualifying not-for-profit organization — will also be able to take advantage of the program.
