March 20 is the International Day of Happiness, a day dedicated to promoting happiness as a fundamental human goal. This year, the theme is caring and sharing. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes this occasion and calls for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.”
NYC Office of Labor Relations and WorkWell NYC have created an informative guide titled “How Good Habits Drive Happiness: The Science and Practice of Good Life.“ It explores the connection between daily habits and happiness, offering strategies for stress management, building meaningful relationships, practicing gratitude, and incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine.
For those seeking peaceful outdoor spaces, NYC Parks maintains the beautiful Garden of Happiness in the Bronx. Originally built by community members in 1988, this 0.217-acre haven has evolved from abandoned city lots into a community space. The garden serves as both a natural refuge and a center for community engagement, hosting voter registration drives, agricultural workshops, and food drives.
MEA also encourages our members to explore volunteer opportunities through the NYC Service portal, which connects New Yorkers with meaningful volunteer experiences. Whether you’re interested in community gardening, mentoring youth, or participating in environmental initiatives, giving back to communities is a powerful way to increase personal happiness while making our city better for all.
As we recognize this International Day of Happiness, NYC MEA invites all our members to take advantage of these resources and remember that happiness can be both an individual and collective pursuit. For more information about the initiative, visit the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness page.
