NYC can be sweltering in the heat, and exposure to extreme temperatures can pose a host of health risks. Luckily, the city has plenty of options for places to keep cool for individuals without sufficient cooling systems.
The NYC Parks and Recreation Department maintains numerous city pools throughout the five boroughs.
- Free outdoor pools open for the season on June 27 and are open 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with an hour maintenance break between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM
- Indoor pool access requires an annual membership fee of $150 for adults 24-61 and $25 for seniors 62+; indoor pools are open year-round and daily hours vary by location

NYC offers 14 miles of public beaches, also maintained by the Parks Department. When weather forecasts call for temperatures of either 95 degrees or higher for two or more days, or 100 degrees for any period of time, the city opens up cooling centers in locations like libraries, community centers, and senior centers. Hours and accessibility vary by location. Find your nearest center here.
High temperatures are dangerous, and care should be taken to keep yourself from experiencing a medical emergency. Be sure to keep hydrated by drinking lots of liquid (avoid excess sugar and alcohol) and eating fruits and vegetables; avoid spending time outside during the hottest part of the day, especially doing anything strenuous; wear plenty of sunscreen and loose clothing; and seek air-conditioned places when possible.
