The International Day of Friendship, observed on July 30, was proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations to inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities through friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals. Social isolation can be harmful to wellbeing and lead to serious health problems including depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease. The NYC Department for the Aging addresses social isolation among older New Yorkers through several programs:
Friendly Visiting Program
- Volunteer program connecting homebound older adults with visitors (in-person, phone, or video) to build friendships and reduce isolation
