While the summer has reached its unofficial end, it doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop! All sorts of events around town are here to help you bid adieu to school-free days and welcome cooler weather.
Soak up some late summer sun on one of New York’s many beautiful beaches; the NYC Parks & Recreation Department maintains 14 miles of beaches around the City!
Live life out loud and move to the calypso beats at the West Indian Day Parade! A feast for all the senses, the parade is one of the city’s biggest parties. It takes place on Monday, September 2, beginning at 10:00 AM; this year’s route runs down Eastern Parkway between Utica Avenue and Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
End summer with a bang and watch the Coney Island Fireworks on Friday, August 30. The free show starts out with a karaoke party in front of Deno’s Wonder Wheel at 7:00 PM, and then the main event begins at 9:45 PM.
Tap into your inner thespian and check out Unrehearsed: 12th Night in Central Park on Saturday, August 31. The free performance consists of actors who had only 30 days to memorize their lines and get off-book, and the cast has never rehearsed with each other! Audience members are encouraged to bet on which actors they think will flub their lines, and referees are waiting to flag any and all mistakes!
While Labor Day is often treated as the last hurrah of summer, it is important to remember the greater cause it celebrates: the labor movement! With roots dating back to the late 1800s, Labor Day shines a light on the many contributions workers have made to the health and prosperity of the country and serves as an opportunity to celebrate the impact of labor unions and reflect on and advocate for better workplace protections.
