Member Highlight: Darrell L. Sims

The MEA wishes to extend heartfelt congratulations to our president, Darrell Sims, on his recent achievement in receiving the Schneps Media Leaders of Labor 2025 Legacy Award. The annual award seeks to highlight and champion local individuals and organizations for their contributions to the labor movement, focusing on how their advocacy has strengthened workers’ rights across the region. This year’s ceremony was held on October 8 at Terrace on the Park in Queens. The evening’s celebrations featured a Bushmill’s whiskey tasting and a networking opportunity for these titans of the labor movement. Proceeds from the evening’s raffle benefit Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW), an organization dedicated to helping women in careers in the skilled trades.

Mr. Sims, in his second term as President of the NYC Managerial Employees Association, has devoted his career to advocacy and service. After a 39-year career with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development  as the first African American registered architect in their employ, he is now concentrating his efforts in retirement on advocating for the thousands of NYC managerial employees throughout the City government in his role here at the MEA. Mr. Sims has worked to protect the City-provided health care promised to municipal employees upon retirement as well as called for longevity pay for in-service managers.

We are proud of Mr. Sims for this great achievement and look forward to seeing what other accomplishments he earns through his tenure!
