National Nutrition Month

Calling all foodies! March marks National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to promote informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. This nationwide observance began in 1973 as National Nutrition Week and expanded to a month-long campaign in 1980 due to growing public interest in nutrition education.

This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us,” celebrates the universal role food plays in our lives beyond consumption. Food connects us to cultural heritage, brings communities together during celebrations, and serves as a common language across backgrounds. This theme reminds us that healthy eating habits not only nourish our bodies but also strengthen our connections to family, community, and traditions.

NYC Office of Labor Relations’ WorkWell NYC offers resources through their “Eat Well” program to support healthy eating habits. These include:

  • healthy cooking tutorials and recipes
  • Eat Well workshops that can be scheduled at agencies
  • educational materials that promote healthy eating
  • recorded webinars on nutrition topics
  • 5-A-Day tracker to help people consume adequate fruits and vegetables
  • Hydration Challenge Tracker for monitoring water intake
  • information about NYC Farmers Markets where affordable, local produce can be found

WorkWell NYC’s “Let’s Move NYC Step Challenge” is back, with registration closing March 16. This program, which includes prizes for top teams and steppers, invites City employees to walk, run, or roll towards their fitness goals. Participants can join their agency team in a healthy competition or compete individually by meeting personal daily step goals. Recognition will also be given to participants meeting certain goals.
