National Volunteer Week

Volunteers Wanted! National Volunteer Week, observed April 15-21, highlights the important role volunteers play in addressing community challenges. As a focal point of National Volunteer Month in April, this annual celebration was established in the United States in 1974 to recognize those who dedicate their time to serving others and encourage more citizens to engage in volunteer activities.

Volunteering creates a ripple effect of positive impacts – both for communities and for volunteers themselves. Beyond the satisfaction of helping others, volunteers enjoy measurable benefits, including:

  • Improved mental health and increased sense of belonging
  • Better physical health, including lower blood pressure
  • Protection against cognitive decline and increased longevity
  • Stronger community connections and expanded social networks

  1. NYC Service connects New Yorkers with volunteer opportunities. Through the NYC Service Portal, residents can discover opportunities that match their interests, skills, and availability. It offers programs such as AmeriCorps host site support, Youth Leadership Councils for young New Yorkers aged 14-21, and donation options for those unable to commit time to volunteering.
  2. Emergencies and disasters. Help Now NYC, managed by NYC Emergency Management, provides information on how to assist during crises. Current initiatives include supporting asylum seekers by sharing space, making donations, and volunteering. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program also offers training in disaster response, while health professionals can register with the New York City Medical Reserve Corps to provide critical care during public health emergencies. 3. The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation “Let’s Green NYC” initiative invites volunteers to help maintain and beautify the city’s green spaces. This program offers a number of pathways for involvement, for individuals/corporate group. To sign up for volunteer opportunities with NYC Parks, visit Let’s Green NYC.
