Summer Rising Program

New York City is offering Summer Rising for students in grades K-8 this summer. This free program is a partnership between New York City Public Schools and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Any student currently in kindergarten through eighth grade (2024-2025 school year) attending school in New York City is eligible to participate, pending seat availability.

Key dates to remember:

  • March 4, 2025: Application opens in MySchools
  • March 28, 2025: Application closes
  • April 24, 2025: Results and Waitlist available
  • July 2, 2025: Summer Rising starts for K-8 students
  • July 4, 2025: Program closed for Independence Day
  • August 8, 2025: Program ends for middle school students
  • August 15, 2025: Program ends for elementary students

Students will experience academic support from licensed teachers in the morning and enrichment activities led by community-based organizations in the afternoons and on Fridays. Activities include field trips, arts, and outdoor recreation in a safe, supportive environment. All participants receive breakfast, lunch, and a snack daily.

Program schedules vary by grade level:

  • K-5 students: July 2–August 15, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM (six weeks of academics and enrichment, plus a seventh week of CBO-led enrichment and trips)
  • Grades 6-8: July 2–August 8, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Students with 12-month IEPs (District 75): July 3–August 13, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Students with 12-month IEPs (Districts 1-32): July 2–August 12, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • ASD Programs: July 2–August 7, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Students with 12-month IEPs will have the option to participate in DYCD-led extended day enrichment hours (until 6 PM) while English language learners will receive instruction targeting language and literacy development with support from English as a New Language (ENL) teachers through various instructional models.
