Tax Day is approaching and below are available resources to help you prepare your return.
The IRS Direct File program, introduced in 2024, continues to be available to eligible New Yorkers. This program allows qualifying individuals to file their federal tax returns for free directly with the IRS and then export their information to the New York State Direct File system to complete state returns.
Several free tax preparation options exist for different situations:
- IRS Free File Guided Tax Software is available until October 15, 2025, for taxpayers with incomes of $84,000 or less.
- For those comfortable with electronic tax forms, Free File Fillable Forms are available regardless of income level.
- The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax preparation for qualified individuals, including seniors, those with disabilities, limited English proficiency, or annual incomes below approximately $67,000. To locate the nearest VITA or TCE site near you, use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887.
Checking your refund status could be done through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app, with updates available within 24 hours after e-filing or up to 4 weeks after mailing a paper return. Under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit cannot be issued before mid-February, with most related refunds available by March 3rd for direct deposit recipients.
Tax season unfortunately also brings increased scam attempts. Be vigilant and remember that legitimate IRS representatives will never:
- Threaten jail time or lawsuits over the phone
- Demand immediate payment
- Request credit card information by phone
- Require specific payment methods like gift cards
If you receive suspicious communications, report IRS-related incidents to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and forward suspicious emails to phishing[@]irs.gov.
