National EMS Week is May 17 – 23. MEA would like to express our sincere gratitude to all Emergency Medical Service providers across New York City for their dedication and lifesaving work. The commitment to serving our communities, often in the most challenging circumstances, represents the highest ideals of public service.
This year’s theme is “Improving Outcomes, Together.” The week is organized by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in partnership with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) to promote nationwide recognition of EMS professionals. The New York City EMS System comprises over 70 Emergency Medical Service agencies from Volunteer, Proprietary, Hospital-Based, and Municipal sectors. Each plays an important role in providing emergency medical care under protocols established by the Regional EMS Council of NYC, with all operations overseen by the New York State Department of Health.
Municipal EMS agencies include New York City Fire Department (FDNY) EMS and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Emergency Services Unit (ESU). The system also includes numerous hospital-based EMS agencies across the five boroughs. At the hospital, the emergency room staff at the various locations across the NYC Health + Hospitals system – the largest municipal healthcare system in the country – perform essential work each day and play a pivotal role in New York’s ability to navigate all manor of crises.
