United Nations at 80

Looking for something to do? United Nations Day, observed annually on October 24, marks the anniversary of the UN Charter’s entry into force in 1945. In 2025, the UN celebrates its 80th anniversary under the theme “The United Nations at 80: Building our future together.” Since its founding, the organization has worked to promote peace, human rights, and social progress globally.

The UN offers several tour options at its New York City headquarters, including:

  • Standard Guided Tour – The classic one-hour tour through UN Headquarters, including visits to the General Assembly Hall and Security Council Chamber (meetings permitting).
  • Art Tour – Explore the UN’s collection of artworks and historic objects donated by member states since 1950, featuring works by Marc Chagall, Candido Portinari, and other prominent artists. Includes access to the Security Council, General Assembly Hall, and other chambers (meetings permitting). Available every other Thursday at 1:15 pm and by request.
  • Architecture Tour – Discover the modernist design and international style of the UN headquarters building, a collaborative effort by 11 renowned architects from around the world. Available every other Tuesday at 1:00 pm and by request.
  • Children’s Tour – Designed for ages 5-10, this tour features a child-friendly “Kids Corridor” with interactive world maps, flags, a refugee tent, and educational games about the UN’s work and global citizenship. Includes a visit to the General Assembly Hall (meetings permitting). Available Fridays at 1:30 pm and by request.
