Vaccinations: What You Need to Know

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, an annual observance highlighting the importance of vaccination for people of all ages to help protect communities from serious diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages people to talk to a healthcare provider they trust about staying up to date on their vaccinations.

The NYC Health Department’s Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) provides vaccine record services for New Yorkers. For children under 19, all immunizations reported by NYC healthcare providers are included, as providers are required by law to make these reports. For adults, immunizations may be reported by NYC healthcare providers with patient consent. These official records can be submitted to child care centers, schools, camps and employers.

For complete information, visit NYC Health’s official website for Vaccine Records.

All NYC students ages 2 months to 18 years in public, private, parochial schools, day care, Head Start, pre-K, or nursery school must receive required vaccinations, and children not meeting requirements will be sent home from school. Only medical exemptions are accepted, and there are no religious exemptions for vaccination requirements in New York.

  • Find providers: use NYC Health Map or call 311
  • Annual check: Verify yearly if additional vaccines are needed; learn more about Required Vaccinations in NYC Schools
  • Flu vaccine requirement: Children ages 6 months to 59 months in day care, Head Start, pre-K or nursery school must receive one flu vaccine dose between July 1 and December 31
