World Health Day

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, brings global attention to critical health issues affecting communities worldwide. This observance, established by the World Health Organization, serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for accessible healthcare and preventative wellness measures for all populations.

This year’s celebration kicks off a year-long campaign titled ““Together for health. Stand with science”, which focuses on the importance of scientific collaboration in maintaining the public health. The campaign endeavors to rebuild public trust in scientific fact and to encourage people and governments to support science-backed health initiatives. Visit WHO’s official website to learn more about this campaign.

Locally, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), New York City’s public health agency, is instrumental in protecting our city from a wide range of health concerns. Their work touches many of aspects of everyday life for New Yorkers, from inspecting food establishments to issuing dog licenses to maintaining vaccination records.  They manage a variety of clinics to help address a variety of health conditions, including sexual health concerns, immunizations, and tuberculosis testing and treatment. They help to mitigate the public health impacts of emergencies and are central to identifying and containing the spread of disease.  Their website hosts an extensive repository of information for identification, prevention, and treatment of a large number of health conditions, from asthma to the Zika virus

MEA thanks the dedicated medical professional at DOHMH for their tireless efforts in keeping New York City healthy.
