City Planning: World Population Day

World Population Day, observed annually on July 11 by the United Nations, highlights global population challenges. The theme for 2025, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,” calls for ensuring youth have the rights, tools, and opportunities to shape their futures.

The NYC Department of City Planning (NYC DCP) continues to address housing and population challenges in New York City. Their recent achievements include the launch of the Manhattan Plan, a proposal to add 100,000 new homes to Manhattan over the next decade. Other key accomplishments include:

  • City of Yes for Housing Opportunity, which will build 80,000 new homes over 15 years and invest $5 billion in infrastructure updates
  • Successfully added 265,595 addresses to Census Bureau files for the 2020 Census
  • Advanced neighborhood plans that would deliver 50,000 units across neighborhoods
