Public Service Loan Forgiveness: update

Attention, civil servants with student loans! Recent changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program may make it easier for you to achieve forgiveness on your loans. In order to qualify for loan forgiveness under the PSLF, one needs to:

  1. Work full-time for a qualifying employer (such as a government entity or non-profit organization)

  2. Have federal Direct loans

  3. Make 120 on-time, qualifying payments on an income-driven repayment plan

As a result of the pandemic, a temporary waiver – which must be completed by October 31, 2022 – will allow for any period of repayment since October 1, 2007 to qualify for loan forgiveness “regardless of loan program, repayment plan, or whether the payment was made in full or on time” provided qualifying employment was maintained.
